I've recently started working with fwbuilder as a means to create & manage some custom iptables based firewall configurations quickly & easily. While I will be one of the first to toute the importance of understanding the underlying technology (iptables in my case), fwbuilder can be a really nice tool for keeping track of your firewall rules no matter what your level of expertise.
